THE BOBBSEY TWINS IN THE COUNTRY By Laura Lee Hope

The Bobbsey Twins in the Country, the second book in the long-running Stratemeyer Syndicate series, was originally published by Chatterton-Peck in 1907. Grosset & Dunlap reissued this title, along with The Bobbsey Twins and The Bobbsey Twins at the Seashore in 1913 and subsequently began publishing new titles. The early G&D editions featured white spine dust jackets and standard artwork with a circular spine emblem declaring "For Children of 5 to 10 Years." The books were bound in green cloth with applique covers that matched the artwork on the dust jacket. In the early 1920's G&D introduced new dust jacket and applique artwork. Circa 1930, the "For Children of 5 to 10 Years" emblem disappeared, the applique cover was eliminated and this title was published with a plain white spine dust jacket, with the exisiting cover art, for the remainder of the decade. Some print runs offered Bobbsey Twins paperdolls on the rear panel of the dust jackets. In the early 1940's, G&D switched to the pink spine dust jacket format. In the 1930's and 1940's, Saalfield and Goldsmith each produced editions of this title. In the late 1940's, the blue and white spine standard dust jacket format was introduced. In 1950, in an attempt to keep the series current, the text of The Bobbsey Twins in the Country was revised and the book was reissued, still using the blue and white spine artwork. In 1950, Whitman issued a reprint, in dust jacket, which featured the original text. Whitman reissued this title in a glossy picture cover format in the early 1960's. In 1964 or 1965, Whitman reissued this title in a matte picture cover format. Whitman also issued the matte picture cover of this title, along with The Bobbsey Twins: Merry Days Indoors and Out and The Bobbsey Twins at the Seashore in a boxed set with a cardboard slipcase. In 1961, Grosset & Dunlap updated the text again and reissued this title as The Bobbsey Twins' Adventure in the Country in the wrap-around illustrated dust jacket format with new cover art. In 1963, this title was issued in picture cover format, with the same cover art as the previous edition . In 1989, this title was revised for a third time, by Nancy Axelrad, and reissued in a thin, red spine picture cover edition with new artwork by Pepe Gonzalez.
