MACMILLAN COMPANY READING BOOKS
THE MACMILLAN COMPANY READING BOOKS, written by Arthur I. Gates, Jean Y. Ayer, Franklin T. Baker, Celeste Comegys Peardon and Miriam Blanton Huber, were two series of readers published in the 1930's and 1940's as THE WORK-PLAY BOOKS and the NICK AND DICK READERS.
MAIDA
The MAIDA series consisted of 16 volumes written between 1909 and 1955. Some early editions were originally published by Huebsch and Viking but the bulk of the series and subsequent reprints were available from Grosset & Dunlap.
MAJOR LEAGUE LIBRARY
The MAJOR LEAGUE LIBRARY consisted of at least 23 titles published in picture cover format by Random House in the 1960's and 1970's. Authors contributing to this series include Furman Bisher, Jim Brosnan, Frank Graham Jr., Dave Klein, Bill Libby, Howard Liss, Alexander Peters, Lou Sabin, Dave Wolf, Jack Zanger and others.
MANDINGO
The MANDINGO/FALCONHURST series was intended for adult readers. It consists of 14 novels centered around the slaves and masters of a southern plantation called Falconhurst. The original trilogy, written by Kyle Onstott, consists of MANDINGO, DRUM and MASTER OF FALCONHURST. There were 11 sequels by Lance Horner and Ashley Carter subsequently published in paperback. The best way to enjoy this series is to read the original trilogy and then slowly work your way through the rest of the collection.
MARJORIE
The MARJORIE series, written by the prolific Carolyn Wells, consisted of six volumes orignally published by Dodd, Mead & Company between 1907 and 1912. Later reprints were available from Grosset & Dunlap. The titles in the series are: MARJORIE'S VACATION, MARJORIE'S BUSY DAYS, MARJORIE'S NEW FRIEND, MARJORIE IN COMMAND, MARJORIE'S MAYTIME and MARJORIE AT SEACOTE.
MARJORIE DEAN
The MARJORIE DEAN series, written by Pauline Lester, consists of 14 titles originally published by the A.L. Burt Company as three separate sets between 1917 and 1930. The series are: MARJORIE DEAN, HIGH SCHOOL (four volumes written in 1917), MARJORIE DEAN, COLLEGE (four volumes written in 1922) and MARJORIE DEAN, POST GRADUATE (six volumes written between 1925 and 1930).
MARLOWE BOOKS FOR GIRLS
The MARLOWE BOOKS FOR GIRLS collection, by Amy Bell Marlowe, consisted of at least 10 titles, including the three ORIOLE PUTNAM titles which were also marketed as a stand alone series.
MARS SERIES (Edgar Rice Burroughs)
The MARS series, written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, consists of 11 titles originally serialized in pulp magazine and subsequently published in hardcover between 1917 and 1964. The titles in the series are: A PRINCESS OF MARS, THE GODS OF MARS, THE WARLORD OF MARS, THUVIA, MAID OF MARS, THE CHESSMEN OF MARS, THE MASTER MIND OF MARS, A FIGHTING MAN OF MARS, SWORDS OF MARS, SYNTHETHIC MEN OF MARS and JOHN CARTER OF MARS.
MARS SERIES (Otis Adelbert Kline)
Otis Adelbert Kline's MARS SERIES, consisted of two novels, originally published in pulp magazines. The titles in the series are: THE SWORDSMEN OF MARS (1933) and THE OUTLAWS OF MARS (1933).
MARY JANE
The MARY JANE series, written by Clara Ingram Judson, consisted of 19 titles published between 1918 and 1939. The first 12 titles were originally published by Barse and Hopkins from 1918 through 1927. Volumes 17 through 19, and reprints of the preceding 16 titles, were published by Grosset & Dunlap from 1933 through 1939.
MAXIE
The MAXIE SERIES consisted of seven volumes written by Elsie Bell Gardner and published by Cupples & Leon between 1932 and 1939. The titles in this series are: MAXIE: AN ADORABLE GIRL, MAXIE IN VENEZUELA, MAXIE SEARCHING FOR HER PARENTS, MAXIE AT BRINKSOME HALL, MAXIE AND HER ADVENTURES IN SPAIN, MAXIE IN THE JUNGLE and MAXIE AND THE GOLDEN BIRD.
MEADOW-BROOK GIRLS
The MEADOW-BROOK GIRLS consisted of six titles originally published by Altemus in 1913 and 1914. The earliest Altemus editions feature an appliqué illustration, matching the dust jacket art, pasted to the front cover of the book. Later Altemus printings had plain covers. Other reprint editions, some using the original Altemus art, were available from Saalfield Publishing Company.
MEG
The MEG series, written by Holly Beth Walker, consisted of six books published in pictorial cover format by Whitman Publishing Company between 1967 and 1972. Later paperback reprints were also available from Golden Press.
MEHITABLE STORIES
The MEHITABLE STORIES consisted of five titles, written by Katharine Adams, originally published by the MacMillan Company between 1921 and 1927. The collection was later reprinted by Grosset & Dunlap in the 1950's and 1960's. Titles include: MEHITABLE, MIDSUMMER, MIDWINTER, THE SILVER TARN and WISP, A GIRL OF DUBLIN.
MEL MARTIN BASEBALL STORIES
The MEL MARTIN BASEBALL STORIES, a Stratemeyer Syndicate series marketed und"John R. Cooper" house name, consisted of six volumes originally issued between 1947 and 1953. The first two titles were originally marketed by Cupples & Leon in 1947. Garden City reprinted these two titles and published four new titles in 1952 and 1953. Books Inc. reprinted the entire set in the late 1950's.
MEXICAN MYSTERY STORIES FOR GIRLS
The MEXICAN MYSTERY STORIES FOR GIRLS series, by Helen Randolph, consisted of three volumes published by the A.L. Burt Company in 1936. Later reprints, utilizing the original dust jacket artwork, were available from Saalfield Publishing Company. The titles in this series are: THE SECRET OF CASA GRANDE, THE MYSTERY OF CARLITOS and CROSSED TRAILS IN MEXICO.
MEXICAN WAR SERIES
The MEXICAN WAR series, written by Edward Stratemeyer, consisted of three volumes originally published by Dana Estes & Company between 1900 and 1902. Later reprints were available from Lothrop, Lee & Shepard. The titles in this series are: FOR THE LIBERTY OF TEXAS, WITH TAYLOR ON THE RIO GRANDE and UNDER SCOTT IN MEXICO.
MIKE MARS
The MIKE MARS series, written by Donald Wollheim, consisted of eight titles published by Doubleday & Company between 1961 and 1964. The titles in the series are: MIKE MARS, ASTRONAUT, MIKE MARS FLIES THE X-15, MAKE MARS AT CAPE CAVAVERAL, MIKE MARS IN ORBIT, MIKE MARS FLIES THE DYNA-SOAR, MIKE MARS, SOUTH POLE SPACEMAN, MIKE MARS AND THE MYSTERY SATELLITE and MIKE MARS AROUND THE MOON.
MISS PAT
The MISS PAT series, by Pemberton Ginther, consisted of ten titles originally published by the John C. Winston Company between 1915 and 1920. The titles are: MISS PAT AND HER SISTERS, MISS PAT AT SCHOOL, MISS PAT IN THE OLD WORLD, MISS PAT AND CO, LTD, MISS PAT'S HOLIDAYS AT GREYCROFT, MISS PAT AT ARTEMIS LODGE, MISS PAT'S PROBLEM, MISS PAT IN BUENOS AIRES, MISS PAT'S CAREER and MISS PAT'S GREAT IDEA.
MOBY BOOKS
The MOBY BOOKS series of adaptions of classics were similar in style to Whitman's Big Little Books of the 1930's and 40's. These books measure 5.5 inch by 4 inches and feature an illustration on every other page. At least 41 titles were available in this series during the late 1970's and early 1980's. In 2002, a handful of additional titles were issued by Playmore without the Moby Books logo.
MOLLY BROWN
The MOLLY BROWN series, by Nell Speed, consisted of eight volumes originally published by Hurst & Company between 1912 and 1921. Later reprints were also available from A.L. Burt Company. The titles in the series were MOLLY BROWN'S FRESHMAN DAYS, MOLLY BROWN'S SOPHOMORE DAYS, MOLLY BROWN'S JUNIOR DAYS, MOLLY BROWN'S SENIOR DAYS, MOLLY BROWN'S POST-GRADUATE DAYS, MOLLY BROWN'S ORCHARD HOME, MOLLY BROWN OF KENTUCKY and MOLLY BROWN'S COLLEGE FRIENDS.
MOTHER WEST WIND STORIES
The MOTHER WEST WIND STORIES, written by Thornton Burgess, consisted of 8 titles originally published by Little, Brown & Company and reprinted extensively by Grosset & Dunlap from the 1940's through the 1970's. Titles include: OLD MOTHER WEST WIND, MOTHER WEST WIND'S CHILDREN, MOTHER WEST WIND'S ANIMAL FRIENDS, MOTHER WEST WIND'S NEIGHBORS, MOTHER WEST WIND "WHY" STORIES, MOTHER WEST WIND "HOW" STORIES, MOTHER WEST WIND "WHERE" STORIES and MOTHER WEST WIND "WHERE" STORIES.
MOTOR BOAT CLUB
THE MOTOR BOAT CLUB Series, by H. Irving Hancock, consisted of seven volumes published by the Henry Altemus Company between 1909 and 1912. Early editions had the typical Altemus appliqué cover which matched the dust jacket art.
MOTOR BOYS
The MOTOR BOYS series, a Stratemeyer Syndicate product marketed under the "Clarence Young" house name, consisted of 22 volumes published by Cupples & Leon between 1906 and 1924.
MOTOR MAIDS
THE MOTOR MAIDS series, written by Katherine Stokes, consisted of six volumes originally published by Hurst between 1911 and 1914. Later reprints were also available from Donohue. The titles in the series are: MOTOR MAIDS' SCHOOL DAYS, MOTOR MAIDS BY PALM AND PINE, MOTOR MAIDS ACROSS THE CONTINENT, MOTOR MAIDS BY ROSE, SHAMROCK AND THISTLE, MOTOR MAIDS IN FAIR JAPAN and MOTOR MAIDS AT SUNRISE CAMP.
MOUNTAIN PONY
The MOUNTAIN PONY series, written by Henry V. Larom, comsisted of four titles originally published by Whittlesey House. Grosset & Dunlap later reprinted this series as part of the FAMOUS HORSE STORIES collection. Titles include: MOUNTAIN PONY, MOUNTAIN PONY AND THE PINTO COLT, MOUNTAIN PONY AND THE RODEO MYSTERY and MOUNTAIN PONY AND THE ELKHORN MYSTERY.
MY TINY 3-D BOOK SERIES
The MY TINY 3-D BOOKS SERIES consisted of at least 14 titles published by Playmore. Titles include: GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS, THE FROG PRINCE, THREE LITTLE KITTENS, CINDERELLA, JACK AND THE BEANSTALK, HANSEL AND GRETEL, SNOW WHITE, THUMBELINA, A.B.C. BOOK, TELL ME WHAT TIME IT IS!, COUNTING LITTLE INDIANS, LITTLE RED RIDING HOOOD, MOTHER GOOSE and THE THREE LITTLE PIGS.
MYSTERY STORY FOR GIRLS
Each title in this Cupples & Leon collection, which consists of 12 volumes, was marketed as A MYSTERY STORY FOR GIRLS. Five of the titles were written by Mildred A. Wirt (1906-2002) , the ghostwriter of the early Nancy Drew Mysteries. Other authors contributing to this series include Alice Anson, Anna Andrews Barris, Izola L. Forrester, Pemberton Ginther and Frances Y. Young.
