RADIO BOYS
THE RADIO BOYS, a Stratemeyer Syndicate series marketed under the "Allen Chapman" house name, consisted of 13 volumes published by Grosset & Dunlap between 1922 and 1930.
RAGGEDY ANN & ANDY STORIES
The RAGGEDY ANN & ANDY STORIES, written by Johnny Gruelle (1880-1938), consisted of 19 titles released during the author's lifetime. Stories continued to be ghostwritten after his death, some using "Johnny Gruelle" as a pen name. Publishers include M.A. Donovan Company, Bobbs-Merrill Company, Chatham River Press, Whitman Tell-A-Tale Books, Golden Press Little Golden Books and Grosset & Dunlap Wonder Books.
RAILROAD SERIES
THE RAILROAD SERIES, a Stratemeyer Syndicate series marketed under the "Allen Chapman" house name, consisted of 10 volumes. The first two titles were published by Mershon in 1906 and 1907 and later reprinted by Chatterton-Peck Company. Volumes three through ten, and reprints of volumes one and two, were available from Grosset & Dunlap from 1909 through 1928. This set is sometimes called the RALPH OF THE RAILROAD series.
RAINBOW BINDING EDITIONS
Blue Ribbon Books issued at least 17 titles in the Rainbow Binding Collection in the 1920's and 1930's. This series consisted of reprints of classics such as AESOP'S FABLES, KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS, ROBIN HOOD, ROBINSON CRUSOE, SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON, TALES FROM SHAKESPEARE and others. These early pictorial cover editions had illustrations by Louis Rhead and Frank E. Schoonover. The spines and rear covers feature a distinctive rainbow image.
RANDY STARR
The RANDY STARR SERIES, a Stratemeyer Syndicate product, consisted of three titles previously marketed as "THE SKY FLYERS" by the Henry Altemus Company. In the late 1930's and early 1940's, the Saalfield Publishing Company reissued all three titles as the RANDY STARR SERIES. The titles in the series are: AFTER AN AIR PRIZE, OVER STORMY SEAS and LEADING THE AIR CIRCUS.
"READ-IT YOURSELF" BOOKS
The Golden READ-IT YOURSELF Book series consisted of at least 24 titles issued by Golden Press in the early to mid-1960's. Titles include: A DOG'S LIFE, A PICK FOR A NICKEL, BELLING THE CAT AND OTHER STORIES, THE KING WHO LEARNED TO SMILE, MY VERY OWN PUPPY, PEAR-SHAPED HILL, THE WHALE HUNT and many others.
RED RANDALL
The RED RANDALL series consisted of eight volumes published by Grosset & Dunlap between 1944 and 1946. Volumes #1 through 7 were published with white spine dust jackets. Volume #8 featured a wrap-around illustrated dust jacket.
RED RYDER
The RED RYDER series, based on the comic strip by Fred Harmon, consisted of five volumes originally issued by Whitman between 1941 and 1951 as part of the "2300" series. The titles in the series are: THE MYSTERY OF THE WHISPERING WALLS by R.R. Winterbotham, THE SECRET OF WOLF CANYON by S.S. Stevens, THE ADVENTURE AT CHIMNEY ROCK by H.C. Thomas, THE SECRET OF THE LUCKY MINE by Carl W. Smith and THE RIDDLE OF THE ROARING RANGE by Jerry McGill.
RENFREW
The RENFREW series consisted of eight titles by Laurie York Erskine (1894-1976), originally published by Appleton & Company from 1922 through 1941. These stories of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were later available in reprints by Grosset & Dunlap. The RENFREW stories were also adapted for radio, film and television.
REX LEE
The REX LEE series, by Thomson Burtis, consisted of 11 volumes published by Grosset & Dunlap between 1928 and 1932.
RICK BRANT
The RICK BRANT series, by John Blaine, consisted of 24 titles published by Grosset & Dunlap from 1947 through 1967. The last title, THE MAGIC TALISMAN, was finally printed in 1989. Volumes #1-16, originally published in dust jackets, were later reprinted in pictorial cover format. Volumes #17-24 were only printed in pictorial cover. The first three titles were written by Peter Harkins and Hal Goodwin. Volumes #4-24 were solo efforts by Goodwin.
RIN TIN TIN
Between 1954 and 1958, Whitman Publishing Company issued three hardcover titles based on the ABC TV Series THE ADVENTURES OF TIN TIN TIN, starring Lee Aaker and James Brown. All three titles were issued in thick glossy pictorial cover format. The titles were: RIN TIN TIN'S RINTY (1954) by Julie Campbell, RIN TIN TIN AND CALL TO DANGER (1957) by Doris Schroeder and RIN TIN TIN: THE GHOST WAGON TRAIL (1958) by Cole Fannin.
RIP FOSTER
RIP FOSTER RIDES THE GRAY PLANET, by Blake Savage, was issued by the Whitman Publishing Company in Dust Jacket format in 1952 with illustrations by E. Deane Cate. This single title was reissued as ASSIGNMENT IN SPACE WITH RIP FOSTER in pictorial cover format in 1958 with new illustrations by Denny McMains.
RIVERWORLD
The RIVERWORLD series, written by Philip José Farmer (1918-2009) , consists of five titles originally published between 1971 and 1983. Titles in the series are TO YOUR SCATTERED BODIES GO, THE FABULOUS RIVERBOAT, THE DARK DESIGN, THE MAGIC LABYRINTH and GODS OF RIVERWORLD.
ROBIN KANE
The ROBIN KANE series, written by Eileen Hill, consisted of six titles issued by the Whitman Publishing Company in pictorial cover format between 1966 and 1971. Titles include: THE MYSTERY OF THE BLUE PELICAN, THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM, THE MYSTERY OF GLENGARY CASTLE, THE CANDLE SHOP MYSTERY, MYSTERY IN THE CLOUDS and THE MONSTER OF WOLF POINT.
ROVER BOYS
The ROVER BOYS series consisted of 30 volumes written and marketed by Edward Stratemeyer, writing as "Arthur M. Winfield," between 1899 and 1926. Early titles were published by a variety of houses including Mershon, Stitt, and Chatterton-Peck before the Stratemeyer Syndicate finally settled the series with Grosset & Dunlap. G&D published volumes #12 through 30, as well as reprints of # 1 through 11. Whitman later reprinted eight titles as part of the WHITMAN BOOKS FOR BOYS collection.
ROW, PETERSON & COMPANY READING BOOKS
The ALICE & JERRY READING BOOKS were issued by Row, Peterson & Company from the 1930's through 1965. Early titles were primarily written by Mabel O'Donnell and illustrated by Margaret and Florence Hoopes with later revisions by other writers and artists. A companion series, THE WONDER-STORY BOOKS, was offered by this publisher as supplemental reading for the ALICE and JERRY books.
ROXBOROUGH PLANTATION
THE ROXBOROUGH PLANTATION SERIES consists of six volumes written by Royston Ellis under his "Richard Tresillian" pseudonym between 1977 and 1984. Titles include: THE BONDMASTER, BLOOD OF THE BONDMASTER, THE BONDMASTER BREED, BONDMASTER FURY, BONDMASTER REVENGE and BONDMASTER BUCK.
ROY BLAKELEY
The ROY BLAKELEY series, written by Percy Keese Fitzhugh (1876-1950), consisted of 18 titles published by Grosset & Dunlap between 1920 and 1931. The ROY BLAKELEY stories were one of five scouting series written by Fitzhugh that featured overlapping characters residing in the town of Bridgeboro, New Jersey.
ROY ROGERS
The ROY ROGERS series, consisted of five volumes originally issued by Whitman between 1945 and 1952 as part of the "2300" series. The titles in the series are: ROY ROGERS AND THE GOPHER CREEK GUNMAN by Don Middleton, ROY ROGERS AND THE RAIDERS OF SAW TOOTH RIDGE by Snowden Miller, ROY ROGERS AND THE GHOST OF MYSTERY RANCHO by Walter A. Tompkins, ROY ROGERS AND THE OUTLAW OF SUNDOWN VALLEY by Snowden Miller and ROY ROGERS AND THE RIMROD RENEGADES by Snowden Miller.
ROYAL
The ROYAL series consists of at least two volumes by Stuart Jason centering on the life of a Mandingo slave on the Hunnicut Hill slave-breeding plantation. Titles include ROYAL STUD and ROYAL MASTER, both published by Manor Books in 1976.
RUTH FIELDING
The RUTH FIELDING series consisted of 30 volumes produced by the Stratemeyer Syndicate and marketed under the "Alice B. Emerson" house name. The series was published by Cupples and Leon in a variety of dust jacket formats from 1913 through 1934. Ghostwriters attributed to this series include W. Bert Foster, Elizabeth M. Duffield Ward and Mildred A. Wirt.
