SCOTT, FORESMAN & COMPANY READERS
The DICK & JANE READING BOOKS, published by Scott, Foresman & Company, were used in schools from the 1930's through the 1960's. The texts were revised and retitled numerous times and, in 1965, the artwork was updated to add racial diversity. The Cathedral Readers, issued for use in Catholic schools, changed "Dick & Jane's" names to "John & Jean."
Elson-Gray Basic Readers
The ELSON-GRAY BASIC READERS, written by William H. Elson and William S. Gray, were issued by Scott, Foresman & Company in the 1930's. The characters of Dick and Jane were first introduced in these basel readers.
Pre-Primers
The Pre-Primers were: BEFORE WE READ, WE LOOK AND SEE and WE WORK AND PLAY. In 1956 the text and artwork were revised. In 1962, Pre-Primers became: WE READ PICTURES, WE READ MORE PICTURES, BEFORE WE READ, SALLY, DICK AND JANE , FUN WITH OUR FAMILY and FUN WHEREVER WE ARE. In 1965, artwork was updated to reflect racial diversity and the titles of two of the pre-primers were changed to NOW WE READ and FUN WITH THE FAMILY.
Primers
The Junior Primer for the New Basic Readers was GUESS WHO. The Primer was FUN WITH DICK AND JANE. In 1956, both were revised and reissued. In 1962, FUN WITH DICK AND JANE was retired and GUESS WHO became the hardcover primer.
1st Grade Readers
The 1st Grade Reader was OUR NEW FRIENDS. In 1956 it was revised and reissued. In 1962, it was retired and FUN WITH OUR FRIENDS and MORE FUN WITH OUR FRIENDS became the 1st Grade Readers.
2nd Grade Readers
The 2nd Grade Readers were entitled FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS and MORE FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS. In 1956, both titles were revised and reissued. In the 1960's, Scott, Foresman and Company overhauled the Basic Readers and reissued the second grade readers as FRIENDS OLD AND NEW and MORE FRIENDS OLD AND NEW.
3rd Grade Readers
The Scott, Foresman & Company 3rd Grade Readers were entitled STREETS AND ROADS and MORE STREETS AND ROADS. In 1956, both titles were revised and reissued. In the 1960's, both titles were dropped and the new second grade readers, ROADS TO FOLLOW and MORE ROADS TO FOLLOW were introduced.
4th Grade Readers
The 4th Grade Readers were entitled TIMES AND PLACES and MORE TIMES AND PLACES. In the 1960's, both titles were retired and the new 4th Grade Reader, VENTURES, was introduced.
5th Grade Readers
The 5th Grade Readers were entitled DAYS AND DEEDS and MORE DAYS AND DEEDS. In the 1960's, both titles were retired and the new 5th Grade Reader, VISTAS, was introduced.
6th Grade Readers
The 6th Grade Readers were entitled PEOPLE AND PROGRESS and MORE PEOPLE AND PROGRESS. In the 1960's, both titles were retired and the new 6th Grade Reader, CAVALCADES, was introduced.
Scott, Foresman Talking Storybook Box Sets
In the 1970's, Scott, Foresman & Company issued a series of TALKING STORYBOOK BOX sets which featured a 33⅓ RPM record and a hardcover book in a cardboard carrying case. There were two series issued in this format and selected titles were distributed in England and France.
