LANDMARK BOOKS
The Landmark Books collection consisted of 122 titles issued by Random House between 1950 and 1970. Volumes #1 through 103 were originally published in dust jacket. First printings of volumes #104 through 122, along with later reprints of the earlier 103 titles, were issued in a pictorial cover format with cover art printed directly on the boards of the book, eliminating the need of a dust jacket. Selected titles were published by Spencer Press in dust jacket and issued in a ten volume set marketed as Landmarks of American History
The Landmark Books were available in both trade, library and book club editions. The book club editions, issued monthly for $ 1.50 plus shipping, are identified by the "Young Readers of America Selection" annotation on the dust jacket flap. These editions are often found with facsimilie letters from the author. The signatures on these letters often mislead the inexperienced collector to believe it is an authentic letter signed by the author. The book club editions were issued from the same print runs as the trade editions and stated printings are often found on the copyright page.
