DUST JACKET EDITIONS


By the mid-1940's, Grosset & Dunlap and the Stratemeyer Syndicate felt the early Nancy Drew dust jackets were beginning to look dated. In 1946, with the publication of volume #23, The Mystery of the Tolling Bell, G&D switched to a new dust jacket version, known among collectors as the "Wrap Illustrated" format. These dust jackets featured cover art that "wraps around" and covers the spine. The artwork for the early wrap editions was provided by Russell Tandy, longtime Nancy Drew illustrator. In 1949, Bill Gillies began illustrating the dust jackets. His work was used on all new titles and revisions of earlier titles until 1953 when Rudy Nappi assumed the task. Gillies artwork, as well as some of Tandy's later work, continued to be used for the series well into the 1960's and the conversion to the pictorial cover editions. A total of 26 Nancy Drew titles were issued in the wrap format. Endpapers included the Orange Silhouette, Blue Silhouette, Blue Digger and the Blue Multi. In 1962, G&D began issuing the series in the yellow spine matte pictorial cover, or "picture cover," format. A pictorial cover edition is a hardcover book which has the cover art printed directly to the boards of the book, eliminating the need of a dust jacket.

Note: The number listed in parentheses after the condition indicates the number of series titles listed on the front flap of the dust jacket.
For example, a copy of volume #1, The Secret of the Old Clock, which lists to volume #30 is an earlier printing than a similar copy listing to volume #37.
