WAGONS WEST By Dana Fuller Ross

This 24 volume paperback series, published by Bantam books from 1979 through 1989, was marketed as "The Sweeping saga of the proud, passionate men and women caught up in the great adventure of America's westward drive." Written by prolific ghostwriter Noel B. Gerson, this series was originally conceived as a four volume set detailing the adventures of a wagon train enroute from Missouri to Oregon in 1837. Sales were so brisk, however, that by the time the wagons rolled into Oregon!, over four million copies of the Wagons West books were in print and readers were clamoring for more. The principal families of the series, the Blakes and the Holts, and their assorted kith and kin, soon fanned out to every future state in the north, south and mid-west. The sagas continued, as the Blake and Holt families' lineage became more entangled, through 20 more volumes, culminating at the Centennial Celebration of 1876. The series proved so profitable, that it generated three spin-off series: The Holts: An American Dynasty, Wagons West: The Frontier Trilogy and Wagons West: Empire Trilogy.
